Welcome to the West Virginia I Chapter of the Blue Knights
In 1984 attempts by members of the Charleston Police Department to form a chapter of the Blue Knights was initiated. A minimum of 15 law enforcement officers, who own motorcycles, is required to form a chapter. Attempts to find 15 officers who were willing to commit their time to start the chapter failed.
On June 12, 1985 a charter was issued to West Virginia One, the first such charter in West Virginia. This charter was a joint effort between Charleston Police Officer Jerry Pauley and West Virginia State Trooper Wayne Rumbaugh. The original 15 members came from police agencies from Charleston, Huntington, and the West Virginia State Police.
The first officers of Blue Knights West Virginia I were President, Wayne Rumbaugh; Vice-president, Jerry Pauley; Secretary / Treasurer, Don Caldwell. Directors were C.E. Shelton, Pete Lake and John Davies.
In January 1986 elections were held and new officers elected were President, Jerry Pauley; Vice-president, Jimmy Spriggs; Secretary / Treasurer, Steve Neddo. Directors for 1986 were Ross Smith, Pamela Smith and Joe Tyree.
On February 25, 1986 Jerry Pauley and Jimmy Spriggs registered Blue Knights West Virginia I as a non-profit organization in the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office at Charleston. Membership then wrote by-laws and drew up a constitution as set forth by the International organization.
It was during this time period that Jimmy Spriggs designed a set of "Colors" which included the registered trademark of the Blue Knights and the State of West Virginia colors of blue and gold. The "Colors" insignia was hand-made by a woman in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Blue Knights West Virginia I is in the Mason - Dixon Conference that includes the States of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia with quarterly meeting being held by the Conference in various sites within the conference area. Mason - Dixon representatives are elected to represent the conference at the International Convention.
